The history of the Welshclan’s kennel.
In 1980, after being on the waitinglist for almost a year, we bought our first dog, a Rottweiler dog named Aram. A year later we came in contact with an association which occupied itself with working Rottweilers. This has been a very good learning experience for us. During this period we met a Rottweiler breeder, Ulla Bletz, from who we bought in 1983 our Rottweiler bitch Birka. It was 1986 when we came into contact with other branches of dog sport, like agility and obedience. We also decided that, as well as the Rottweiler, we would like to own a smaller breed. Eventually this became a Cairn Terrier named Doenja and our first Welsh Corgi Cardigan. This Corgi was bred by Mrs. Bitter and she was called Black half a Penny van Boncilla (Penny). With Penny we have had much success as a show dog. In the beginning of 1989 the idea of breeding arose. The kennelname Welshclan’s was chosen. Unfurtunately Penny was not suitable as a broodbitch. When she was two years old, she suffered from time to time of paralyses (slip disc). Therefore we have never bred with her. After the age of seven years we had to put her asleep. Our first experience with breeding pups was with the Cairn Terrier. With her we have bred without problems three litters. We also have bred a litter with our rescue dog a Belgium Sheperd (Malinois) named Bora. In 1993, I went together with my sister in law, Marina Minet-de Raaf, to England where we bought two bitches. The blue merle bitch Pibior Llwyd (Meaghan) and her black/white sister Glenmor Robin (Daisy)bred by Dianne Burrows. In 1994 I bought the black/white dog Grangefield Special Story (Sean) and his brindle sister Grangefield Midnight Charm (Bess) from their breeder Doreen Paige. In 1997, we got the brindle bitch Gucci's Ciao Mackinlay from Finland, of which Paula Nieminen is co-owner.
Since 1995 I share the kennelname Welshclan’s with my sister in law, Marina. Marina Minet got to know and appreciate the corgi cardigan trough me.
Her first dog was a Bouvier des Flandres and in 1988 she owned her first cardigan dog. Fellow Finch van de Veulenhof (Finch), bred by my friend Ulla Bletz. Marina has won several CAC with this dog and was also very successful doing Agility. Here first experience with breeding was with the bitch Glenmor Robin. Beside showing, breeding and working with her cardigans Marina is also a Flyball instructor.
Then something about me. Beside breeding and showing I also like to work with my dogs doing obedience, agility, flyball, doggy-dance, frisbee and tracking. I also teach a few times a week at two dog schools, training dogs and their owners.
So we not only show our dogs, but we also work with them. This resulted in appearances on two television programs with Glenmor Robin (Daisy); "the wet nose show" and "camera on board" doing flyball.
What we aim to breed, are cheerful, reliable, well built and healthy dogs, with good temperament. We have high standards concerning our dogs when we breed with them. All dogs have been tested on PRA/CEA and Hip Dysplasia. We only breed with dogs that have HD-excellent, HD-good or HD-fair or FCI, HD-A or HD-B. We find the socialisation of our pups very important and therefore they are all born and raised in our home. Because our dogs are a part of our family, it is obvious that they do not live in a kennel but with us in the house.
We are a small select kennel with the breed at heart. We only breed for quality, not quantity.
